Late Night With Jimmy Fallon – A First Episode Review

Jimmy Fallon started his hosting gig of the Late Night last night, and it started off with a guest appearance by Conan O’Brien cleaning out his dressing room.  It made me laugh and it was a good start.  Favorite joke:

Fallon: So, uh, you getting Jay’s old dressing room?

Conan: Leno’s not leaving.

He rolled with the audience pretty well during his monologue, which consisted of SNL Weekend Update-like soundbite jokes.  (The Roots also participated in Slow Jamming the News.  Their performance made me think they’re showing up strictly for a steady paycheck.  I’ll chalk their awkwardness up to inexperience on live late night talk shows.  It’s been awhile since Max Weinberg started on Conan O’Brien – perhaps he was just as awkward.  Wait.  He always looked awkward and played it to great effect.)

Target Demographic: Blonde Mothers, a taped bit, was pretty funny.  I just can’t recall any “highlights.”  Boosh!

Lick It For Ten was a dumb game show where three audience members licked a lawnmower, an all-in-on printer, and a fishbowl (complete with goldfish!) for ten bucks.  I guess Conan had his share of lame concepts, but he learned to play off the lameness for extra humor.  Fallon’s still in SNL mode, but maybe he’ll get there.

(Rihanna in a commercial for Cover Girl?  Too soon to joke?)

His first guest was Robert Deniro and he made some early jokes at Deniro’s expense, with Deniro’s involvement, of course.  Deniro’s not the most glib of interviewees, but Fallon did way more talking than interviewing.  They even ripped off an old joke from SNL gag where they impersonated each other.  But I’ll forgive him, and time will tell how he’ll do with other guests.

Space Train, a short sketch if I ever saw one, was funny.  It was a clip from an “unreleased movie” starring the pair.  Fallon’s character was afraid to fly into space, and Deniro was the space train’s conductor.  This paragraph is longer than the bit.

His second guest was Justin Timberlake.  Much better.  Too much revelling in the old SNL days, and not enough interview again.  But I can’t wait for The Phone – JT’s new MTV show where people get phone calls and their lives are turned upside down for 24 hrs. to win $50,000.  A car blows up in the preview – SOLD!

(FYI: JT also does a mean John Mayer and Michael McDonald impression, even if he’s singing about Bud Light Lime.)

Last guest – Van Morrison.  Good if you think Van Morrison is good.  Is he the Brown Eyed Girl guy?  Looked it up.  Yes he is.

Early predictions for the show:

  • Fallon will probably get better as time goes on.
  • His sketches will probably get more tongue-in-cheek, than tongue-on-lawnmower.
  • The Roots will leave the show six months from now.

Sunday’s TV Picks

Posted in ABC, CBS, Film, FOX, Humor, NBC, The CW, TV with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 30, 2008 by sgottahurt

Let’s begin with an apology.  With the hectsticity that is Thanksgiving weekend (yes, hectsticity is a made up word, but it works, right?), the opportunity to cover Saturday’s TV picks fell to the waist-side (pun intended).  So without further adieu, here’s tonight’s TV selections:

8pm – If you’re watching the football game on NBC, then none of this matters.  If you’re not, it’s a toss-up bewteen the Emmy award-winning Amazing Race on CBS and the tear-jerking Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC.  I dare you to watch a commerical for Home Makeover and not have your eyes water up.  And besides that, I think the show’s name should get a makeover to simply Home MakeoverExtreme is so blase, and also to note, it was a spin-off of a crappy show about plastic surgery.  It wasn’t quite as bad as The Swan, but what is?  (Answer: MTV’s I Want a Famous Face, natch)

9pm – Hmmm…. a lot of tough match-ups here.  A rerun of Fox’s Family Guy or a rerun of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU?  Then there’s also a new episode of ABC’s Desperate Housewives or a new episode of CBS’s Cold Case?  Turn on the remainder of the Bears vs. Vikings game, or else you’re left with Steve Irwin vs. the CIA (Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course on the CW).

10pm – Go with The Unit on CBS and watch President Palmer do something other than hock Allstate.  Or just finish watching the game.

Wednesday’s TV Picks

This photo is from Playboy, but I don't think she has ever posed nude.

No one reads this blog, yet, so the picks for today are for me.  I will check this site and remember what I need to watch tonight.

Wednesday is hump day so, we are going to keep it simple and watch ESPN all day.  There will surely be coverage of the World Series, sprinkled with some NFL injury reports.  In the evening we are going to go with baseball.

8:00pm EST

World Series (Live) Fox – Even if you don’t like baseball you have to at least watch the Series.

Pushing Daisies (DVR) ABC – This show visually looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book.  The concept is original and the story lines are intriging enough to keep me watching.

Knight Rider (DVR) NBC – The Hoff isn’t in this one (except for a brief appearance in the tv movie last year) but it still is pretty good.  K.I.T.T. is amazing in this, probably, the best acting I have seen in years.  Oh, and the eye candy isn’t so bad either (maybe my favorite of the fall season), Deanna Russo (pictured above), who plays Sara.

9:00pm EST

Myth Busters (Live) Discovery Channel – I know I am suppose to be watching MLB but that can wait (the middle innings can be pretty boring sometimes).  In this episode they are testing to see if beer goggles exist.  This will either drastically decrease how much I spend at the bar or increase how many drinks I buy the Ladies.

Ghost Hunters (DVR) Sci Fi –  I can say they have never shown anything that proved the existence of ghost but they have shown some pretty unexplainable stuff.

10:00pm EST

Dirty Sexy Money (DVR) ABC –  This show is about a wealthy family that always seems to be getting in trouble.  The family lawyer and the family patriarch have to get the family out of trouble.  The father wants to just throw money at the problem and the lawyer is always being pushed to his moral limits.  I enjoy this show because it really does show how we, billionaires, sometimes get into trouble but for the most part are just normal people.

Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Island (DVR) MTV –  How can anyone resist a spin off of the original reality tv show.  With all the drunk 20 somethings running around stabbing each other in the back, crazy antics are sure to ensue.

***Note – since you are the only one that reads this, only the shows you like are on here so there is no need to post other ideas
